BirthCircacirca 1802 Elizabeth Hutton was born in Virginia circa 1802.2
Marriage28 Feb 1826 She married William Scott, son of William Scott and Jane Whitely, on 28 Feb 1826 in Washington County, Virginia.3
Cens-185026 Aug 1850 The 1850 census enumerated Elizabeth and William with 7 children. These included John (19), Saml (12), Moses (10), James (6), Madison (2), Jane (15), and Susan (7).2
William may have died between 1850 and 1860. Elizabeth and their children appear to have lived in Bradley County, Tennessee in 1860. Elizabeth was recorded with Robert (24), Samuel (20), Jane (18), Moses (18), Sarah (16), James (14) and Madison (12). James and Madison were listed as having been born in TN; everyone else was born in Virginia. The adjacent household was headed by John Scott (28), b. Virginia.

Although there are discrepancies between this 1860 household and the 1850 Washington County, Virginia entry, the appearance of the relatively unusual name Madison lends support to this being the same family.4
William's sister Elizabeth Snead wrote her will in 1872 at which time she left $200 each to the children of her brother William Scott who were named as William, John, Samuel, Robert, Moses, James and Sallie. She also left Madison Scott 1 acre of land but did not state his relationship to her.5
The 1850 and 1860 census did not record the relationship between the head of a household and the people residing in the home. Therefore only those individuals named as William's children in the will of Elizabeth (Scott) Snead are linked below. However it is possible the family also included daughters Jane and Susan, and son Madison.6

  6. [S16] A 15 year old Jane Scott was enumerated with the household in 1850 (following 2 yr old Madison). An 18 year old Jane Scott was enumerated with Elizabeth in 1860. The 1850 census includes a 7 year old Susan (also listed out of sequence). She was not listed in 1860. Neither Jane or Susan was mentioned as a child of William in Elizabeth Snead's will. Madison Scott was recorded (in sequence) with the rest of the family in both 1850 (age 2) and 1860 (age 12). However, the age of Elizabeth (his presumed mother) varies from 48 in 1850 to 65 in 1860. If the former age is correct she could have been Madison's mother. If the latter age is correct, he may have been a grandson. Elizabeth Snead did not mention Madison's relationship when she remembered him in her will.
