Birth15 Oct 1806 Margaret Hutton was born on 15 Oct 1806, probably in Washington County, Virginia.2
Margaret's father died in 1838 leaving a will that was somewhat unusual for its day. Rather than dictating how his land was to be divided and leaving his widow only a dower interest [life estate], John Hutton left Mary Ann the property in her own name. This was the same land John purchased from his parents in 1794 when John Hutton Sr. divided his Baker Creek (now Hutton Creek) tract.3
Devisee  Margaret's mother Mary Ann Hutton wrote her own will in late April, 1841, leaving the same land to Margaret and her brother John. In return, Margaret and John were to care for their sister Jane who was blind. The land, consisting of 133 acres, was a tall, narrow tract, made more so by the fact Mary Ann instructed that it be divided by a north-south line. Margaret received the land on the west side of the division. Mary Ann Hutton's will was recorded in January, 1849.4
Marriage Margaret married Orr Grinstead.5
Cens-18507 Aug 1850  Margaret and Orr were enumerated together in 1850. Orr was 27 and Margaret was 40; neither could read or write. Orr owned land valued at $1,200. Jane Dunlap (20) and Richard Dunlap (15) were also members of the household.6
Widowed  Orr probably died in the fall of 1851 as the Washington County court ordered his estate appraised on Oct. 27th of that year.7
It appears from census records that Margaret spent the next 38 years living on the land left to her by her mother. In 1860 she was enumerated by herself; she owned land valued at $3,000. In 1870 she was indicated as the owner of land worth $15,000. Several members of the McGlocklan family lived with her. In 1880 Margaret was again enumerated on her own.

However the adjacent household in 1860 and 1870 included the family of Samuel C. Hutton [Margaret's brother] and his wife Isabella. Samuel had not inherited any of his parent's Hutton Creek land and it is likely he helped Margaret run her farm. In 1880, a few months after Samuel's death, his widow and children were again recorded as Margaret's neighbors.8,9,10
Land-Buy28 Apr 1874  In April 1874 Margaret acquired a small 11 acre tract near her other land. The deed was worded such that Margaret held a life estate in the land, and on her death the life estate passed to Samuel C. Hutton and his wife Isabella jointly. On their deaths the land was to become the property of Samuel C. Hutton's children. The tract was purchased from John B. Harris [grandson of Samuel Buchanan through Samuel's deceased daughter Elizabeth (Buchanan) Harris] for $165.11
Will3 Mar 1888  The continuing close relationship between Margaret and the family of her brother Samuel was evident when Margaret wrote her will in 1888. She left her land to Mary Ellen Hutton and Rachel M. Hutton "daughters of Samuel C. Hutton" and also stipulated that "their mother Isabella Hutton shall have a house on and her support from said farm". Margaret included the same stipulation for Rebecca Hutton.12 [Isabella's granddaughter]
Death20 Sep 1890 Margaret died on 20 Sep 1890 at age 83.2
Burial She was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.2
