BirthCircacirca 1773 Leonard Hutton was probably born in Pennsylvania circa 1773. It is difficult to assess Leonard's correct year of birth as his reported age was not consistent across available records. The 1840 census suggests he was born between 1770 and 1780. His 1850 census entry, which probably provides the most reliable estimate, suggests he was born abt 1773. However his age in 1860 (97) and his death record (95 in 1863) suggest he was born in the 1760s.3,4,5,1
Migration  Leonard's father moved his family south from Pennsylvania in the mid 1780s. They settled on land in Washington County, Virginia - on the waters of a creek that 225 years later bears the family name.
Marriage31 Oct 1793 Leonard married Martha McCall on 31 Oct 1793 in Washington County, Virginia.6
Land-Buy18 Feb 1794  John's father purchased several pieces of land on what was then known as Stalnaker's Creek. As his sons came of age he divided the property among them. On Feb. 18, 1794 John and Jane Hutton deeded Leonard 129 acres from the southeast end of their property.7
Land-Sell21 Mar 1797  Three years later, in March 1797, Leonard and Martha sold the same tract to Leonard's brother James for $1.8
Land-Buy17 Aug 1797  Leonard's parents then sold him 177 acres on Indian River, a creek perhaps 4 miles to the southwest. The land was close to a tract on Cedar Creek owned by Leonard's aunt and uncle James and Sarah (Dixon) Hutton. Leonard paid his father $100 for the property. Later it was discovered that the original survey made when John Hutton purchased the tract from George Gamble had omitted a 15 acre finger of land. The error was carried forward when John and Jane Hutton sold the land to Leonard. By the time the error was discovered John Hutton was deceased. Therefore, on Nov. 8th, 1810 Leonard's siblings released their interest in the 15 acres in Leonard's favor. And on Nov. 20th George Gamble deeded the additional land to Leonard.9,2,10
Leonard lived on the Indian River land for 23 years which included both the 1810 and 1820 census enumerations. It is unclear when his first wife Martha died, but it was prior to Nov. 1818 and therefore all of their children were born on Indian River. The 1810 and 1820 census records suggest they had as many 11 children.11,12
Marriage17 Nov 1818 He married second Nancy Baugh on 17 Nov 1818 in Washington County.13
Land-Sell4 Dec 1820  On Dec. 4, 1820 Leonard and Nancy sold their 177 acres on Indian River to George Gamble for $2,150.14
They then moved farther east, settling on land slightly southeast of Marion in present day Smyth County. Smyth Co. was not created until 1832 (from the eastern part of Washington Co. and western part of Wythe Co.) and the land in question sat in Wythe Co. prior to 1832.
Land-BuyJun 1824  In June 1824 Leonard purchased several tracts of land on the waters of the Middle Fork of the Holston River in Wythe County. Five parcels were actually lots, probably in the extinct community east of Marion known as Leggatsville. Leonard purchased lots 7, 8 and 9 on the south side of the street from Henry and Katy Townsend for $85. John Hutton [Leonard's son] already owned lots 3 and 5 on the south side of the street. Leonard also purchased lots 8 and 9 on the north side of the street. He paid Henry Townsend $290 for these lots which fronted the Middle Fork of the Holston River on the north. In addition Leonard purchased 65 acres from Henry Townsend and 55 acres from John and Catherine Townsend.15
Land-Sell11 Jul 1825  The following July Leonard and Nancy sold 42 acres of their Wythe Co. land to Thomas Snider of Washington Co. for $800. Nancy signed the deed with her mark.16
Cens-18301830  Leonard and Nancy's 1830 Wythe Co. census enumeration indicated the presence of 17 people including 9 children under 10. A 20-30 year old male and a 20-30 year old female, who may not have been present in 1820, were part of the 1830 household. This suggests a son or daughter may have returned home, (and possibly a spouse) with several small children. Leonard no doubt had grandchildren of the same age as his and Nancy's youngest children.17
Cens-18401840  The household, though still large in 1840, consisted of 10 people with no children under 10. Leonard was indicated as a 60-69 year old and Nancy was 10 years younger. The census indicates the presence of 2 or 3 males and 3 females born after Leonard and Nancy's 1818 marriage. They may or may not have all been their children.3
Cens-185017 Sep 1850  In 1850 the census recorded the names of everyone in the household. Leonard was 77 and Nancy was 61. The enumeration also included Elizabeth Hutton (21) and Mahlon Hutton (20).4
Cens-18602 Oct 1860  Nancy appears to have died between 1850 and 1860. In 1860 31 year old Mahlon was recorded as the head of a household that included his family as well as his father Leonard, [his sister] Elizabeth Hutton (33) and 36 year old Abraham Hutton.5 [probably Leonard's son or grandson]
Death20 Sep 1862 Leonard died on 20 Sep 1862 in Smyth County, Virginia.1

Research Comment:

Beginning in late 1842 Leonard began to sell parcels of land. Some of the deeds indicate he was in debt and was using his land as collateral. For further information see the Any HUTTON page and look for entries involving Leonard in 1842, 1848, 1854 and 1857.
Leonard had a large family and many of his children remain to be identified with any degree of certainty. The 1810 census notes the presence of 5 young males and 3 young females - a typical number of children for a couple who had been married 16 years. Only 3 of those children, John, born in the 1790s, James, born about 1804 and Dickson, born abt 1810, have been clearly identified. Three more sons, William, Edward and Robert were added between 1811 and 1820 and are apparent on the 1820 census.

As a starting point for further research, it would appear that Leonard and Martha may have had 1 unidentified older son born before 1800 and one born between 1800-1810. A Thomas Hutton, (born 1795-1800) headed a Washington Co. household in 1820 and 1830. Martha's father was probably Thomas McCall, suggesting this Thomas Hutton merits further research. Leonard and Martha also appear to have had 1 unidentified daughter born before 1800 and 2 daughters born between 1800 and 1810 (one who was still at home in 1840 and whose birth can be narrowed to 1800-1804). One of the older daughters may have been the Nancy Hutton who married Thomas Hargis Prator in March 1817. Thomas died within a year of the marriage.

Leonard and Nancy also had several yet-to-be identified children born between 1819 and 1830 (no children were born after 1830). Any of Leonard's eldest children with Martha, several of whom were born in the late 1790s, could easily have had children of the same age as Leonard's younger children with Nancy. The 1830 census in particular suggests the possibility of a blended household. These unknown variables complicate the analysis of Leonard and Nancy's family. However it appears that in addition to the children listed below, Leonard and Nancy had 1 or 2 additional daughters and one or 2 additional sons.

Candidates for these additional children include David Hutton (born about 1819-1820; purchased part of Leonard's land - along with Mahlon Hutton - in 1857), Martha Hutton (married Nathaniel Jones in 1840; marriage bond signed by Leonard Hutton), Sarah Hutton (married Michael Cormany in 1840) and Abraham Hutton (married Mary Slemp in 1847). A younger Leonard Hutton, born about 1820-1825 is also sometimes suggested as a son of the elder Leonard Hutton. Others believe he was the son of James Hutton and Elizabeth Philips and therefore the grandson of the elder Leonard. The younger Leonard's 1880 census entry states that his father was born in Virginia which would be accurate for James, but not for the elder Leonard who was born in Pennsylvania.

John Hutton purchased a tract of land in 1795 from George Gamble and then sold it to Leonard in 1797. Later it was discovered that the original surveyor mistakenly omitted a 15 acre section of the tract from his survey.
