Birth20 Mar 1906 Iola Grace Thompson was born on 20 Mar 1906 at Meridian in Bosque County, Texas.4,3
Childhood  She was not yet 3 years old when her mother died. The 1910 census for Meridian recorded Iola's father William, who was an attorney, heading a household that included Iola's older sisters Virgie and Nan, and older brothers Samuel and Bascom. No doubt a good deal of the responsibility for 4 year old Iola fell to 23 year old Virgie.2
Virgie married in June 1910. It appears she continued to look after Iola who was enumerated with Virgie and her husband Amos Bass in Eastland County, Texas in 1920.5
Cens-193025 Apr 1930  Iola was a talented artist and musician. By 1930, at age 22, she lived on her own and gave music and art lessons in her home at 703 Adams St. in Amarillo (Texas). Iola's sister Virgie and Amos also moved to Amarillo. The sisters' brother Bowen lived in Amarillo by 1930 as well.6
Cens-19402 Apr 1940  Later Iola bought a home at 810 8th Street, which she valued at $1,400 in 1940.7
Iola composed her own songs in addition to teaching music. An article in the Dec. 16th, 1948 edition of the Amarillo Globe discussed the success of her songs "Whistles", "I Want a Dog for Christmas", and "Music Box". The article included a very attractive photo of Iola.8
Death15 Jun 1958 Iola died from cancer on 15 Jun 1958 in Amarillo, Potter County, Texas, at age 52. Her usual residence was listed as 929 Bowie St. in Amarillo.4,3
