Name Other Mary Emma was known as Mamie.3 
Cens-Sum  "Mamie" did not marry. Like her older sister Sarah (Jennie) she lived at home with her parents. Following her father's 1903 death she lived with her mother. The sisters also helped raise Clara Horton. [the daughter of their deceased sister, Anna (Gardner) Horton]4,5,6 
Cens-19207 Jan 1920  Jennie and Mamie's mother died in 1911. At some point after this the 2 women left Virginia and settled in Los Angeles, California. There they continued to provide a home for Clara. Clara's older sister Mary Ellen and her husband, Robert Taylor, also lived with the sisters in Los Angeles.7 
Death25 Jul 1943 Mary died on 25 Jul 1943 in Los Angeles, California, at age 71.8,9 
Burial She was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.10 

Research Comment:

Mamie's entry in her parent's Bible recorded her name as Mary Emma Gardner. However the Bible was later altered to read Mary Ellen Gardner. Interestingly, her year of birth was also overwritten so that it appeared to read 1873 instead of 1872.11

This photo was taken around 1913 to 1914. It probably commemorated a visit to southern California by Mamie's brother Tom who lived in Alaska. The photo includes Mamie's brothers George and Edwin and her sister Sarah Virginia ("Jenny"). The 3rd woman in the photo is Lulu Allison, wife of George Gardner.
