Cens-187027 Sep 1870  Alson grew up in Glade Spring township where he was the eldest of his parent's five children.2
Name Other  He appears in some records as Allison.5,3
Education  Alson attended Emory and Henry College.6
Later he attended the University of Virginia where he received a Master's degree.7
Cens-188028 Jun 1880 By 1880 he had moved to New Garden in Russell County, Virginia where he was employed as a teacher.8
Family tradition holds that Alson met his future wife Margaret when she was a student at a private school in Glade Spring where he was a teacher. But given that Margaret was from New Garden, it seems more likely they met while Alson taught school there in 1880.
Marriage25 Feb 1881 or 25 Feb 1882 He married Margaret Kendrick, daughter of John McFarland Kendrick and Elizabeth Catharine Lockhart, on 25 Feb 1881 or 25 Feb 1882 in Russell County, Virginia.9,10
17 Sep 1884  Following their marriage the couple resided in Washington County where Alson was instrumental in the opening of the Southwest Virginia Female Institute. When the school formerly opened in 1884 Alson was its first principal. The school was very successful and quickly outgrew its surroundings. In 1893 a larger facility opened at Bristol (in 1920 it became Virginia Intermont College).6
In 1892 Alson and Margaret returned to Honaker in Russell County with the idea of opening a school similiar to the Southwest Virginia Institute. They built a 12 room home; Margaret's father supported their efforts and built a 3 story school building. The first two floors housed classrooms and an auditorium; the 3rd floor was a boys dormitory. There was no indoor plumbing. Professor Hutton was known as an excellent educator and the school, called Old Dominion College, was very successful.6
Cens-190027 Jun 1900  Alson and Margaret were enumerated in Honaker with their 6 children at the turn of the century.11
A few years later public education became a reality and the school was sold to the county school board.6
Cens-191025 Apr 1910  By 1910 Alson and Margaret had moved northeast to the larger city of Roanoke where Alson continued to teach. The couple's 8 children were enumerated with them at 417 Albermarle Ave. The 3 oldest children: Thomas, Eula, and John were also teachers.12
Death1921 Alson died in 1921.13
Burial He was buried at William Mitchell Lockhart, Jr. Cemetery in Russell County, Virginia.13
