Birth9 Dec 1832 Martha Ann Duff was born on 9 Dec 1832.1
Marriage12 May 1853 She married William Snodgrass Glenn, son of Benjamin Glenn and Sarah Snodgrass, on 12 May 1853 in Washington County, Virginia.1,2
Cens-186018 Jul 1860 In 1860 Martha and William were recorded on the only census on which they appear together. William, at age 39, was listed as the owner of land valued at $2,000 and personal property worth $2,250. Besides Martha (27), the couple's first 3 children, Sarah (6), Margaret (4) and Jane (2) were also present, as was 72 year old Sarah Glenn.3 [William's mother]
William's 44 year old brother John was also a part of the household and was recorded as the owner of an equal amount of land and personal property. Neighboring households included William's brothers Robert and Samuel, each owners of $2,000 in land and $2,500 in personal property.
Widowed5 Feb 1865  Martha was widowed on 5 Feb 1865 when William was killed at the Battle of Hatcher's Run during the Civil War. He was a member of Company H. of the 37th Virginia Infantry.4
Cens-Sum  William's death left Martha a 32 year old widow with 6 young children. It appears that she and the children made their home with William's brothers John and Robert Glenn, neither of whom married. Martha's eldest daughter Sarah married Robert Dunlap in 1874 but died following the birth of a daughter in 1875. Hence the 1880 household, headed by Martha's brother-in-law John Glenn, included Martha's 5 surviving children as well as 33 year old Robert Dunlap and Martha's 5 year old granddaughter Sallie Dunlap.

John Glenn died in 1897. In 1900 his brother Robert was enumerated as head of the family. The household included Martha's son Robert J. Glenn, her daughter Margaret (and Margaret's husband Hugh Grant) and Martha's granddaughter Sallie (Dunlap) Harris, along with Sallie's husband and two small children.5,6
Milit-Pens9 Jun 1906  In 1906 Martha applied for a pension from the state of Virginia based on William's service to the Confederate cause. She stated that she owned no land and lived with her son near Alvarado in Washington County. The forms attesting to William's service and death were signed by A. Neff and W.B. Kelly. A later entry shows that Martha received a payment of $40 on August 31, 1912.4
Death10 Jan 1920 Martha died on 10 Jan 1920 at age 87.1
Burial She was buried at Bethel Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.7
