Migration John settled in Erwin, Tennessee, in the late 1890s and about the time of his marriage to Annie Ryburn opened a general store on Depot Street. It was later moved to the center of Ervin on Main Street.3 
Marriage5 Jan 1902 He married Annie Park Ryburn, daughter of John Patrick Sharp Ryburn and Caroline Agnes Crumley, on 5 Jan 1902 in Erwin, Unicoi County, Tennessee.4,5 
Cens-191018 Apr 1910  John's business interests were reflected in the 1910 census, where he described himself as a "salesman of general merchandise". The same census listed his wife Annie and three children, 7 year old Edith, 4 year old Albert and 2 year old Alma. John and Annie were also providing a home for John's mother.6 
Cens-19208 Jan 1920 By 1920 another 3 sons had been added to the family (Wayne, John and Clyde). This census enumeration described John as a salesman in a grocery store and recorded the family's place of residence as "Nolichuckey Ave."7
  A fifth son would join the family a year later. 
Death12 Jul 1949 John died on 12 Jul 1949 at age 72.2 
Burial He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Unicoi County.2
