Childhood Samuel was born in southwest Virginia, but moved with his parents to Carroll County, Illinois when he was six or seven years old. 
Marriage19 Dec 1872 He married Mary Catherine Lower on 19 Dec 1872 in Carroll County, Illinois.3 
Cens-188024 Jun 1880  Eight years after their marriage Samuel and Mary were enumerated in Rock Creek township of Carroll County, Illinois with their three children. They were also providing a home for Samuel's mother, Eleanor (Davis) McCoy.4 
  Samuel's mother died in 1891. 
Cens-190016 Jun 1900  In 1900 Samuel and Mary Catherine were still farming in Rock Creek township. Their daughter Anna had died in 1890 but their remaining three children, ranging in age from twenty-six to fifteen, were single and living at home.5 
Death18 Feb 1905 Samuel died on 18 Feb 1905 at age 69.2 
Burial He was buried at Lanark Cemetery in Lanark, Carroll County, Illinois.2
