Birth2 Dec 1875 John Buchanan Edmondson was born on 2 Dec 1875 in Virginia.1
Cens-18805 Jun 1880  John's childhood was spent on the family farm in Washington County, Virginia. In 1880 the family consisted of John, his parents, his 6 siblings and his 63 year old widowed grandmother, Rosa (Buchanan) Edmondson.2
In the summer of 1898 a photograph taken on the porch of his parent's home in Virginia recorded John (identified on the photo as Jack) and his siblings. Included in the photo were John's sister Rose and her husband, Calvin "Sam" Fleming, who were visiting from Hunt Co., Texas. John returned to Hunt County as well where he was enumerated helping Rose and Sam on their farm in 1900.3
Marriage14 Jun 1906 He married Evelyn Preston, daughter of Willliam Gray Preston and Margaret McQuown, on 14 Jun 1906 in Washington County.4
John's brother Andrew was married to Evelyn's first cousin Carrie Preston.
Migration  John and Evelyn settled in in Oklahoma shortly after their marriage. Their first 2 children, Margaret and Rose were born there in 1907 and 1908. Rosa and Calvin Fleming were already in Oklahoma, having moved there from Texas around 1902. The 2 couples lived in what became Tillman County in 1907 but which had been Comanche territory through 1901 and then Comanche County in the Oklahoma Territory until statehood in 1907.
Cens-19101910 However, John and Evelyn did not stay in Oklahoma. Sometime prior to the 1910 census they moved on to Clayton, Union County, New Mexico, where they were recorded on that years enumeration. The couple's daughter Rose died in 1909 so the household consisted of John, Evelyn and their 3 year old daughter Margaret.5
Several of John's siblings followed similiar migration patterns. His younger brother Samuel also spent some time in Oklahoma (daughter Sarah b. there in 1906), however he and his family returned to settle in Tennessee around 1908 or 1909. John's younger brother, Sidney, a physician, also lived in Oklahoma for a few years (daughter Tommie b. OK 1908) before he too moved on to Union County, New Mexico. Shortly after the 1910 census John's parents joined him in Union County. Other siblings also made the move.
Land-Patent19 May 1914 John and Evelyn homesteaded 320 acres of land in Union County for which they received a patent on 19 May 1914. The acreage consisted of several parcels of land, primarily situated in section 24, township 27 north, range 36 east.6,7
Milit-Reg12 Sep 1918  In September 1912 John registered for the World War I draft. The form describes him as tall, slender with blue eyes and red hair.1
Cens-19206 Jan 1920 Two years later John and Evelyn were recorded on the 1920 census enumeration for Union County. John, age 44, stated that he was a farmer. He owned his own farm, although it was mortgaged. The household now included John and Evelyn and 4 children: Margaret (12), Mary (8), William (6) and John Jr. (6 months).8
Cens-19306 Apr 1930  By 1930 daughter Margaret was no longer living at home, but the family had expanded with the addition of daughter Rebecca, born in 1921.9
Death19 Nov 1951 John died on 19 Nov 1951 in Minco, Grady County, Oklahoma, at age 75.4

  7. [S16] John received his patent under the authority of the enlarged Homestead Act of 1909 which increased the acreage a settler could receive from 160 to 320 acres. This was done to encourage development of lands that did not have a ready water source. In 1912, the residency requirement for homesteading was shortened from 5 to 3 years (source: E.
