Research Comment:

Thomas' obituary is reported to state that he was survived by 6 children, as well as 6 brothers and 2 sisters. However no children are named in the obituary and I have found no evidence that he married or had children at all. He was single when the 1920 census was recorded. He was probably the Thomas Edmondson (age 63, born in Virginia, parents b. in VA) who resided in Grant Co., New Mexico in 1930. If so he was still single at that time.10

  7. [S16] Thomas received his patent under the authority of the enlarged Homestead Act of 1909 which increased the acreage a settler could receive from 160 to 320 acres. This was done to encourage development of lands that did not have a ready water source. In 1912, the residency requirement for homesteading was shortened from 5 to 3 years (source: E.
