William Moore1

b. circa 1751, d. 2 January 1827
BirthCircacirca 1751 William Moore was born circa 1751.2
Marriage17 May 1776 He married Elizabeth Steele on 17 May 1776.3
Land-Buy16 Jun 1779 On 16 Jun 1779 William purchased 188 acres of land from Samuel Buchanan. The tract was part of 354 acres Samuel bought from William Edmiston in 1775. William's land surrounded the area that later became the community of Lodi.4
Militaryfrom Sep to Nov 1780  Like many of his neighbors, William fought with the Washington County militia at the Battle of Kings Mountain. He was wounded in both the left arm and left knee; the latter wound resulted in the loss of his leg.5,6
Family tradition holds that William was left behind in N. Carolina by the troops and that Elizabeth, hearing of his condition, road by horse-back across the mountains. She brought him back home, walking a good deal of the way herself.7
Milit-Pens20 Dec 1787 On 20 Dec 1787 William was awarded a pension of 15 pounds per year from the state of Virginia for his war service (retroactive to 1 Jan. 1786). The application noted that William had held the rank of private and had been entitled to pay at the rate of 24 pounds annually while he was in service.8
Milit-Pens9 Oct 1789  Two years later, in October, 1789 William's pension was increased by 3 pounds yearly.9
Land-Buy20 Mar 1792  In March 1792 William added an additional 53 acres to the west side of his property. The long, narrow strip sat largely above Rock Spring Cemetery, but surrounded it on all but it's west side.10
Land-Grant17 Mar 1812  Many of the early surveys done in the county were not terribly accurate, resulting in small gaps of unowned land between neighboring tracts. In 1801 (15 acres) and again in 1803 (5.5 acres) William applied for and was granted narrow strips of land at the edges of his larger tract. However, this resulted in a parcel of land with many angles and odd shaped sections, so in November, 1807 his entire tract was resurveyed, resulting in a new inclusive grant being issued him in 1812. His property totalled 261 acres at that time.11
Court Record18 Sep 1820  On 18 Sep 1820 William appointed Col. David Campbell as his attorney in fact to collect William's pension from the Auditor of Public Accounts. He made the same declaration on Sept. 6, 1822.12,13
Court Record24 Mar 1823  In later years William also appointed Andrew Russell and Robert Cummings to serve in the same capacity.14,15
Death2 Jan 1827 William died on 2 Jan 1827.2
Burial He was buried at Rock Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.2
Will-RecdFeb 1827 William's will was recorded in Feb 1827 in Washington County.16
