Birth24 Mar 1820 Armstrong Beattie was born on 24 Mar 1820 in Washington County, Virginia.3
Childhood  Armstrong spent his childhood on his father's lands in the eastern part of present day Washington County. David Beattie's land had been willed to him by his father, David Beattie Sr. who had received a part of the original huge Beattie estate from his father John Beattie.
Migrationcirca 1843  However in the early 1840s, at the age of about 56 or 57, David Beattie sold his land and moved his family west to Missouri, settling in Andrew County.
Marriage24 Mar 1846 Armstrong married Nancy Elizabeth Paulette on 24 Mar 1846 in Andrew County, Missouri.4
Fath-DeathNov 1847 David died in Nov 1847 in Andrew County. His will left his 2 quarter sections of land in township 60 to Armstrong and his older brother John. They were to care for their mother in return.1
Cens-185011 Oct 1850 A few years later Armstrong and Nancy were recorded on the 1850 census, the first federal census to name all members of a household. They were recorded living in Platte township with 2 children in their home: 2 year old Nancy and 1 year old David. Armstrong's mother and sister lived in the adjacent household with Armstrong's brother John and his wife Sarah.5
Land-Grant23 Jul 1851  Armstrong acquired an additional 40 acres of land in section 28 (also township 60) in 1851.6
Cens-Sum  As the years progressed Armstrong and Nancy were enumerated on a series of Andrew County census records with their growing family. In 1860 and 1870 they were again recorded farming in Platte Township where in 1870 Armstrong reported owning land worth $6,960 and personal prop worth $2,800. In 1880 they were enumerated living in Empire township.7,8,9
The change in townships does not indicate that the family moved as Empire township was created from part of Platte township in 1872.
Num Child  Armstrong and Nancy may have had 6 children in addition to those listed below. In 1900 the census asked women how many children they had given birth to and how many were living. Nancy's entry stated that she was the mother of 14 children, but only 7 were living.10
Will30 May 1894 Armstrong wrote his will on 30 May 1894. He left his wife Nancy a life interest in all his real and personal property after which it was to be divided equally into 8 parts. Each of his 7 surviving children (sons David A., William H., Joseph T., and James R. Beattie and daughters Sarah I. McCarty, Mary E. Barbee, and Lydia S. Fulkerson) were to receive an 8th share with the remaining 8th to be divided among his 5 Elliott grandchildren, whom he also named. Armstrong signed the will with his mark.11
Death3 Jun 1894 Armstrong died on 3 Jun 1894 in Andrew County, Missouri, at age 74.3,12
Burial He was buried at Bedford Chapel Cemetery.13
Will-Recd16 Jun 1894 Armstrong's will was recorded on 16 Jun 1894 in Andrew County.
Name Other  Notes left by the genealogist Redmond Cole, who was born in the home of Armstrong's brother J.B. Beattie, refer to Armstrong as "Strong" Beattie.14
