Marriage25 Sep 1824 She married Henry Horne on 25 Sep 1824 in Washington County, Virginia.1,4 
Devisee29 Dec 1835  Martha's father willed her a Negro girl Eliza with the stipulation Eliza was to go to Martha's son John on her death. Also a Negro boy named Jackson who was also to go to Martha's son on her death. And he left to Martha and her son John jointly all of John's entry on the river except that portion given to Andrew; also the sawmill and lots of ground around it [Martha's son John was 9 when his grandfather wrote his will].2 
WidowedAug 1843  Martha was widowed in her mid 30s when Henry died in the summer of 1843.5 
Cens-18509 Sep 1850 Seven years later she was enumerated as the head of the household on the 1850 census for Washington County. Martha owned land valued at $3,600. Also living with her was Elizabeth (21), Catherine (19), Martha (16), Amanda (10), a farmer listed as Kenard Newland, and an 11 year old listed as Joshua Buskell.3 
  Martha's son John Horne was enumerated as the adjacent household. Other family living near by included her niece Eliza Crow (daughter of Martha's deceased sister Elizabeth) and Martha's sister Ann (Edmondson) Snodgrass. 
Cens-18601 Aug 1860  By 1860 Martha's household had dwindled, but still included her 24 year old daughter Martha as well as an 11 year old mulatto boy.6 
  Daughter Elizabeth had died in 1851; daughter Catherine had married James Sutherland in 1853. Catherine and James were recorded living next to Martha in 1860. 
Cens-1860- Slave14 Aug 1860  The 1860 census also included a slave enumeration. Martha was listed as the owner of 1 slave, a 28 year old male.7 
Cens-18805 Jun 1880  Twenty years later Martha was enumerated in the household of her daughter and son-in-law Amanda and John Mahaffey. Martha's daughter Catherine was again the adjacent family.8 
Deathafter Jun 1880 Martha died after Jun 1880.
