Childhood  Beattie spent his childhood on his father's farm in the in Saltville District of Washington County, Virginia. He was the second son in a family of 10 children.3 
Cens-191021 Apr 1910 By 1910, Beattie had ventured west and was working as a pipe fitter at a shipyard in Lorain, Lorain County, Ohio.7 
Cens-19201920  However, by 1920 he was back in Virginia, living at home with his parents in Washington County. He was still employed as a pipe fitter, although the location of his employment is not clear.8 
  Family report that he worked as a pipe fitter at Newport News, Virginia and also at Detroit. His goal was to earn money to purchase a farm back in Washington County.9 
Marriage10 Jun 1925 He married Mary Bailey on 10 Jun 1925 in Washington County, Virginia.1 
  He was 43. She was 27. 
Cens-19304 Apr 1930 They were enumerated a few years later when the 1930 census for the Saltville District of Washington County was taken. Beattie was now farming near his father and other Crenshaw relatives. Besides his wife Mary, 2 daughters were present: 3 year old Margaret and 1 year old Virginia.10 
  In 1937 Beattie and Mary added twin sons to the 6 children already born to them. This adds Beattie to the extensive list of descendants of John Buchanan and Ann Ryburn who counted twins among their offspring. 
Death6 Nov 1951 Beattie died on 6 Nov 1951 at age 69.11,5 
Burial He was buried at Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.5
