Margaret and Samuel spent the first 15 or 16 years of their married lives living in the Holston District of Washington County. The 1880 census recorded Samuel's widowed stepmother as head of the adjacent household. Living with her was Samuel's 42 year old sister Jane who herself was widowed.   At some point between the summers of 1881 and 1885 Samuel and Margaret headed west, spending at least some time in Nebraska where their daughter Elizabeth was born in May 1885. By the birth of son Charles in May 1887 they had settled in Kansas where they were enumerated living in Sherman County in both 1900 and 1910.
