Birth29 May 1844 Samuel Nelson Edmondson was born on 29 May 1844 in Washington County, Virginia.2,1 
Military1861  In 1861 Samuel joined Company F of the 37th Virginia Infantry at Glade Spring Virginia under Capt. George Graham and Col. Samuel Fulkerson. He served for the duration of the war and was wounded at Cedar Mountain (August 1862) and at Chancellorsville (Apr-May 1863). On May 12th 1864 he was captured by Union troops during the Battle of Spotsylvania and transferred to Ft. Delaware where he was held until May 1865. Samuel's brother Mathew, a member of Company H, was also taken prisoner at Spotsylvania and held at Ft. Delaware.3,4,5 
  The 37th Virginia Infantry, which had already suffered terrible losses at Gettysburg, suffered further at Spotsylvania. Of the 270 men who entered the battle 200 were either wounded, killed or captured during the fighting. 
  Samuel and Mathew's older brother William was also a member of Company H of the 37th Infantry. He was captured by Union forces in September 1864 and eventually was imprisoned at Ft. Delaware as well.6 
Marriage23 Nov 1871 Samuel married Sally A. Carmack, daughter of Cornelius Carmack and Martha Susong, on 23 Nov 1871 in Washington County.7 
Cens-18803 Jun 1880  Sally appears to have died within a few years of the marriage as Samuel was enumerated living as a boarder in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1880. He was employed as a carpenter and was stated to be a widower.8 
Cens-19001900  By 1900 Samuel had returned to Virginia, where he continued to work as a carpenter and lived with his brother Mathew and widowed sister Mary Hall in Washington County.9 
Milit-Pens1905  Samuel applied for a pension from the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1905 based on his service during the Civil War. He suffered from bronchitis which he believed was caused by exposure, colds and typhoid fever during the war.5 
Death26 Mar 1907 Samuel died on 26 Mar 1907 in Washington County, Virginia, at age 62.2 
Burial He was buried at Bethel Cemetery in Washington County.2
