Birth6 Oct 1847 James Wiley Buchanan was born on 6 Oct 1847 in Smyth County, Virginia.1 
Childhood James grew up on the family farm in Smyth County. The family of William M. Scott lived next door. It included William's daughter Sarah Jane.2,3,4,5 
Migration1871 In 1871 James left Virginia and moved west to Atchison County, Missouri, where he worked as a farm hand, then rented and eventually owned land northwest of the community of Fairfax.6 
Cens-188010 Jun 1880 In 1880 he lived with the family of Joseph Massock in Atchison County.7 
Marriage4 Jan 1882 James briefly returned to Virginia where he married Sarah Jane Scott on 4 Jan 1882.8 
  James and Sarah spent their married lives farming in Clark township in Atchison County where they raised two daughters and a son who died at age 17. The family farm included a 1 1/2 story house, a barn and smoke house, sheep and cattle sheds, two windmills and an orchard of about 3 acres. They raised cattle, hogs and sheep.9,10 
  James and Sarah like to travel. From about 1910 to 1925 they visited different parts of the United States, traveling from coast to coast.11 
Death9 Jun 1926 James died from cerebral apoplexy on 9 Jun 1926 in Atchison County, Missouri, at age 78.1 
Burial11 Jun 1926 He was buried on 11 Jun 1926 at English Grove Cemetery in Atchison County.1
