Moth-Death1856  Charles lost his mother when he was an infant. His father remarried within 6 months and then moved the family to what at the time was Mercer County, Virginia.6 
Childhood  However, with the development of hostilities between the north and the south his father moved the family back to Montgomery County, which was aligned with the Confederacy. 
Residence  As a young man Charles returned to what by then was West Virginia, settling first in Jumping Branch where he lived for about 10 years.5,7 
Marriage6 Apr 1876 He married first Minerva Alice Lilly, daughter of William S. Lilly, on 6 Apr 1876 in Summers Co., West Virginia.3 
 Charles and his first wife, Minerva Lilly, who was from Jumping Branch, were the parents of 12 children.5 
Cens-188015 Jun 1880  By 1880 the couple were living in Shady Spring, Raleigh County, West Virginia with the first two of their children: William 3 and Boman 1. Charles listed himself as a farmer, but it was also noted that he was maimed or crippled.8 
Cens-19001900  Twenty years later the 1900 census again recorded Charles who by then was a widower. Several of his surviving children were living with him; two married children lived nearby with their families.9 
Marriage He married second Maggie Jewell.5 
Marriage10 Mar 1910 He married third Mrs. Linnie Foy on 10 Mar 1910 in Raleigh County, West Virginia.10 
Occupation In the years prior to his death Charles worked as the toll collector at the Hinton Toll Bridge. He was referred to in his obituary as a "widely known character."5 
Death16 Jan 1934 Charles died on 16 Jan 1934 in Talcott, Summers County, West Virginia, after a six month illness.5 
Burial18 Jan 1934 He was buried on 18 Jan 1934 at Talcott Cemetery in Summers County, West Virginia.5
