Birth11 Dec 1822 Patrick Campbell Buchanan was born on 11 Dec 1822 at the Cove in Rich Valley in Washington (now Smyth) County, Virginia. An alternative source lists his date of birth as Dec. 12, 1818 which disagrees with the date reported on his headstone and the age at death reported on his death record.4,5,6 
  Patrick graduated from Emory and Henry College and later taught math at the same institution.7 
Marriage29 Sep 1856 He married first America Virginia Copenhaver, daughter of David Copenhaver and Jane Anderson, on 29 Sep 1856 in Smyth County, Virginia.1 
Cens-18601860 Four years after their marriage Patrick and America were enumerated living in Smyth County with their two year old son, Benjamin.8 
Cens-187015 Jul 1870  Ten years later the family had grown to include four sons: Benjamin, Edward, William and James. They lived in the Rich Valley district of Smyth County where Patrick farmed land valued at $5,600 in 1870.9 
  Besides being a successful farmer, Patrick held many offices within the political structure of Smyth County, including treasurer and sheriff. He also served as collector of internal revenue for the Confederate states during the Civil War.7 
Widowed  America died on July 2nd, 1871, along with the couple's son Edward. They are buried together in the Buchanan Cemetery in Smyth County, Virginia. 
Marriage24 Nov 1875 He married second Nancy Holt Buchanan, daughter of Wilson Buchanan and Eliza Friel Graham, on 24 Nov 1875 in Smyth County, Virginia.10 
  Nancy and Patrick were first cousins once removed. At the time of their marriage he was 52 and she was 44. 
DeathAug 1877 Patrick died of cancer in Aug 1877 in Smyth County, Virginia, at age 54. It is not clear if the exact date was the 7th (headstone abstract) or the 9th (death register). He and Nancy had been married less than 2 years.4,5,11 
Burial He was buried at Capt. John Buchanan Cemetery in Smyth County, Virginia.4
