Jean grew up in her parent's household in the Holston District of Washington County, Virginia, on land that had belonged to her great grandfather, Mathew Buchanan. Jean did not marry. She remained with her mother following the death of her father in 1901 and her brother John in 1909 [her mother died in 1911]. In 1920 she was enumerated as a housekeeper in the home of her widowed cousin Alexander Findlay Buchanan (son of Benjamin Keys Buchanan) who lived in the vicinity of other Buchanan family members at Keywood.3,5,6,7
Jean was interested in the history of the Buchanan family. In the fall of 1928 or 1929 she met with her cousin, once removed, Rachel Goode Buchanan (a granddaughter of Benjamin Keys Buchanan). The younger woman recorded Jean's memories of the family, in part taken from a manuscript written on Jan. 5, 1889 by Mathew Hay Buchanan [Jean's uncle] and loaned to Jean by his son, Thomas Findlay Buchanan. The notes from that meeting are cited throughout this website as the "Jean Keys Buchanan manuscript."8,9
