Marriage21 Feb 1793 James Hope married Margaret Dryden, daughter of Nathaniel Dryden and Mary (?), on 21 Feb 1793 in Washington County, Virginia.1 
Cens-18101810  The 1810 census was enumerated as of the first Monday in August. As of that date James's household included the following: 2 males under 10 [probably John and James W.], 1 male 10-15 [probably Nathaniel], 1 male 16-26 [probably Adam], 3 females under 10 [probably Mary, Jane and Phoebe], 1 female 10-15 [probably Nancy] and 1 female 26-45 [no doubt Margaret]. The household included 7 slaves.2 
Will8 Oct 1811 James wrote his will on 8 Oct 1811. He left Margaret the full use of the plantation, including the slaves, for 5 years in order to raise and school their children. He also left her dower one third of the land for life as well as one fourth of the moveable property. Ownership of the land was divided among 3 of James's sons: Adam, John and James. Son Nathaniel received a tract of land in Tennessee. James also left his daughter Agness several items including the increase from the cow that her grandmother left her. And he referenced other daughters not yet of age who received a bed and bureau when they came of age.3 
DeathOct 1811 or Nov 1811 James died in Oct 1811 or Nov 1811 as his will was recorded barely a month after it was written.3 
Court Record6 Dec 1811  For reasons not specified, Margaret recounced the will in December, 1811.4 
18 May 1813  As the probate of their father's estate was settled, the younger children were appointed guardians to represent their interests. Two years after James died Hugh Berry and Moses McSpadden were name guardians of John, James W., Polly, Jenny and Phoebe. Hugh Berry alone was name guardian of Nathaniel.5,6
