Leonidas Rosser Littleton1

b. 1 August 1889, d. 1982
Birth1 Aug 1889 Leonidas Rosser Littleton was born on 1 Aug 1889 in Virginia.1,2
MarriageJun 1916 He married Alice Lenore Scott, daughter of Peter Alexander Scott and Rachel Ann Smyth, in Jun 1916.3,4
Dr. Littleton was a chemist and a teacher. In the early years of their marriage the couple appear to have resided in several locations. They may have lived in New Jersey where their daughter Rachel was born in 1917. However daughter Louisa was born in 1919 in Virginia. The 1920 census found them in Buffalo, New York, where Leonidas worked as a chemist for the Dyer [?] Co. He was employed at one time by the U.S. Government Laboratories in Washington DC.2,5
Cens-193028 Apr 1930  However by 1930 they had settled in Washington County where Dr. Littleton taught at Emory and Henry College. The couple appear to have lived on a farm, either on or very near the college campus. In 1930, besides 3 children, the household included Alice's widowed mother Rachel (Smyth) Scott, Alice's brother Emory, and a niece, Kathryn Scott.6
Dr. Littleton was also interested in the genealogy of many Washington Co. families and contributed information now on file at the Historical Society of Washington County. Aleta Spicer dedicated her manuscript on the Smyth family to Dr. Littleton as he shared much of his research on the family with her. It is likely many of the pedigree charts in the book are a result of his efforts since his mother-in-law's (Rachel Ann Smyth Scott) writings appear extensively in the book. Also, Dr. Littleton and his wife were instrumental in the restoration of the Tobias Smyth (Smyth's Chapel) Cemetery.
Death1982 Leonidas died in 1982.1
