Tax1815  In 1815 John's farm, consisting of 125 acres and joining Jonas Smith and David Dorety, was assessed at $450.9 
Will1835 John wrote his will on August 20, 1835. In it he left one third of his estate to his wife, Nancy, and the balance to his children Francis, Thomas, Jonas, Sarah Clark, James, Tobias, Polly, John and William. He appointed his "friend" James Kelly executor. The will was witnessed by G.M. Crawford, Tobias Smyth, and James Heron. It was exhibited in Washington County court on September 28, 1835 where James Kelly posted bond in the amount of $7,000 with William Byars, James Porterfield, Samuel Logan and Caleb Logan his securities.10 
Death8 Sep 1835 John died on 8 Sep 1835 at age 57.11 
Residence  "John Smyth lived on a farm adjoining Smyth Chapel Church. The first contributions of funds to build Emory and Henry College were made at the public sale of his personal property after his death in 1835."12
