Birth1 May 1831 David Alfred Preston Campbell was born on 1 May 1831 in Virginia.4,5 
Childhood David grew up in Virginia, and lived with his mother as a young man following his father's death in 1853.6,7 
  But his wife Susan, whom he married in 1868, was from Missouri, suggesting he might have spent some time there in the late 1860s. 
Marriage23 Dec 1868 He married Susan E. Rhodes on 23 Dec 1868.1 
 David and Susan did not have children of their own, but neither did they live alone. 
Cens-18708 Oct 1870  In 1870 they were living with David's mother, Ann Ryburn Campbell. David's brother John was also enumerated as an adjacent household.8 
Cens-188019 Jun 1880 Ten years later David was enumerated as the head of the household, but his mother Ann was still present. David and Susan were also providing a home for Sarah McConnell, a niece, and John Worley, a nephew. In addition, the census listed a 13 year old adopted child named Hank Clark.3 
Cens-19005 Jun 1900  David's mother died in 1883. Sarah McConnell married in 1885 but was widowed a few years later. By 1900 she was again making her home with David and Susan. A nephew, John Reedy was also living with them in 1900.5 
Will22 Dec 1900 David wrote his will on 22 Dec 1900. He left to his wife Susan whatever remained of his personal property after paying his debts. He also instructed that within 12 months of his death she was to sell his estate and from the proceeds pay John P. Reedy the sum of $25. The balance was to be held by Susan for her own use.9 
Death8 Aug 1901 David died on 8 Aug 1901 at age 70.4,1 
Burial He was buried at Sinking Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.4
