Birth16 Dec 1839 James Harvey Clark was born on 16 Dec 1839 near Meadow View in Washington County, Virginia.5,6 
MilitaryMar 1862  James fought during the Civil War as a member of Company D of the 1st Virginia Cavalry. He served to the end of the war except for a short furlough in 1863.7 
Marriage13 Feb 1875 He married Sarah Ann Horne, daughter of John Edmondson Horne and Mary B. Fullen, on 13 Feb 1875 in Washington County, Virginia.8,9 
  Later, James's brother William would marry Sallie's sister Mattie.  
Cens-188019 Jun 1880  James and Sallie lived with his mother while their children were small. The 1880 census recorded Isabella Clark as the head of the household, with James and Sarah (Sallie), and their sons, John, Henry and David. James's younger brother William, age 40, was also still at home.10 
Land  James lived on the land his grandfather Robert cleared when he came to Washington County from Scotland in 1817.7 
ChildDeath  James and Sallie suffered the loss of 5 of their 7 children in the 20 year period between the 1880 and 1900 census. A son was born prematurely and died at one month of age in 1889. Another son, Chester, died in 1892 at age 6. A daughter, Hellah [Helen?], whose date of birth is not known, died before the 1900 census enumeration. And sons Henry and David died within 3 days of each other in the spring of 1900. They were 21 and 20 years old, respectively. Though their cause of death is not known for sure a descendant of James and Sallie reports that at least some of these deaths were due to dysentery.11 
Death1 Jun 1900 James died on 1 Jun 1900 at age 60.5 
Burial  He was buried in a square at Old Glade Cemetery with his wife Sallie and their children Henry, David and Chester. Although no stones are visible, it is likely the other children are also buried there.5
