Cens-19006 Jun 1900  Joseph was enumerated in his father's household in the Glade Spring District of Washington County, Virginia. He was the youngest child born to his parents. Also living in the household was Joseph's 5 year old cousin, Ben Ryburn [whose mother had died when he was an infant]. Joseph's father and older brother James both worked as locomotive engineers.2 
Cens-191018 Apr 1910 Joseph was living at home with his mother and brothers when the 1910 census was enumerated. He reported that he was working as a locomotive fireman.5 
Marriage He married Corrie Rutherford. The Littleton Ryburn papers report the date as 9 June 1899 but Joseph was only 13 and he was still single and living at home in 1900 and 1910.6
