Cens-18606 Oct 1860 Nancy spent her early childhood years in her grandmother's household in Washington County, Virginia. Both Nancy's grandmother and mother were widowed. It is not clear though if the women were living in the home built by Nancy's father in what would later become the town of Bristol, or on the dower lands of Nancy's grandmother, Nancy (Ryburn) Buchanan. The 1860 census noted that the younger Nancy, at age 9, owned personal property valued at $2,000.2
