BirthMay 1849 Mary M. Zimmerman was born in May 1849 in Virginia.3,4
Ward25 Dec 1854 Mary's father died in November 1854. The following month George Worley was named guardian of Mary and her sister Nancy. He was the husband of their mother's sister, Amanda (Buchanan).1
Ward27 Jan 1862  However George died in late 1861 and on 27 Jan. 1862 William Rhea became the girls' guardian.5
His relationship to them, if any, is not known to me.
Cens-18606 Oct 1860 Mary and Nancy were enumerated in 1860 living with their widowed mother in Washington County, Virginia. The census taker recorded that Mary owned real estate valued at $1,500 and personal property valued at $2,000. This no doubt represented her inheritance from her father's estate.2
Cens-187014 Jun 1870  Mary's mother married John Keys in 1861. The 1870 census listed Mary and Nancy, along with their cousin Charles Worley in their stepfather's household.6
Marriage15 Sep 1873 She married Bruce Spurgeon on 15 Sep 1873 in Washington County, Virginia.7
Cens-18807 Jun 1880  Following their marriage, Bruce and Mary continued to live with Mary's mother and stepfather, John Keys, in the Goodson District [later Bristol] in Washington County, Virginia.8
Cens-190018 Jun 1900  They were still enumerated with Mary's mother in 1900, although by then Martha (Buchanan) Zimmerman Keys was 74 years old and again widowed. Mary was 51 and Bruce was 56. They had been married 26 years. Bruce's occupation was listed as Justice of the O__. Mary stated she had given birth to 3 children, but only 1 child was living. This was 29 year old John, who made his home with his parents and grandparents.4
Cens-191018 Apr 1910  Ten years later Mary herself was a widow. She was enumerated that year in her son J.[John]'s home at 818 Fairmount Avenue in Bristol. John had married in the intervening years and now had two children of his own, including a daughter, Martha, no doubt named for Mary's mother.9
Death1917 Mary died in 1917.3
Burial She was buried at East Hill Cemetery in Bristol, Virginia-Tennessee.3

  10. [S7] Although no record specifically lists Nannie as the child of Bruce and Mary Spurgeon, she is buried with them; the "Z" recorded as her middle initial on her stone no doubt stood for Zimmerman, Mary Spurgeon's maiden name. Nannie (Nancy) was Mary Spurgeon's grandmother's given name. Also, on the 1900 census Mary (Zimmerman) Spurgeon indicated that 2 of her children were deceased and only 1 is otherwise accounted for.
