Father | John Clark2,3 b. 10 May 1787, d. 13 Dec 1826 |
Mother | Eleanor Porterfield4,5 b. 2 Apr 1789, d. 28 Mar 1846 |
Birth | 13 Mar 1825 | John Porterfield Clark was born on 13 Mar 1825 in Virginia.6,7 |
Legatee | 12 Mar 1846 | John's mother, Eleanor Porterfield Clark, wrote her will on March 12th, 1846. She left her estate to her 5 children, including John, with the notation that the two girls were married and had already received more than the boys. The estate was settled in 1848 at which time John received $48.33.5,8 |
Marriage License | 9 Sep 1850 | He and Martha A. Ryburn obtained a marriage license on 9 Sep 1850 in Washington County, Virginia.9 |
Cens-1860 | 11 Oct 1860 | John and Martha were enumerated on the 1860 census of Washington County, Virginia with four children: Mary (9), Charles (7), John (5) and Ellen (3). John was farming and owned real estate valued at $8,000.10 |
Cens-1870 | 1870 | The years between the recording of the 1860 and 1870 census cannot have been easy for this family. Ellen died in July 1866 at the age of eight. Amanda Frances, born in July 1863 died in November 1865, and Albert Dixon, born two months before the death of his older sister Ellen, died two months after her.11 |
Cens-1880 | Jun 1880 | The 1880 census clarified that John and Martha's home was in the Glade Spring area of Washington County. Still living at home that year was their daughter, Mary, and their sons Charles, Henry (John), and Earl, as well as Henry's wife, Nannie. Mary was listed as having been born in Illinois, suggesting perhaps John and Martha left Virginia briefly after their marriage.12 |
Cens-1900 | 27 Jun 1900 | Following Martha's death in 1888, John lived with his son Earl and daughter Mary.7 |
Death | 30 Apr 1904 | John died on 30 Apr 1904 at age 79.6 |
Burial | | He was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.6 |
