Devisee14 Mar 1836  Solomon Barrick's grandfather, Philip Barrick, wrote his will on 14 March, 1846. He left his land to Solomon ..."in consequence of his supporting his grandmother and myself comfortable whilst we each of us live"... Solomon was also appointed executor. Philip's will was recorded in Washington County, Virginia, on 26 June 1837.1
Land-Buy18 Jan 1841  On Jan. 18, 1841 Solomon purchased the interest of 5 heirs of Joseph Buchanan Jr. in 131 acres of land on the waters of the Middle fork of the Holston River. He paid $210 to Peter Faris and Ann, his wife, James Buchanan & Levina, his wife, Samuel Faris & Lydia, his wife, John Buchanan & Nancy, his wife, of Hawkins Co., Tennessee. Peter Faris had additionally purchased the share of William Buchanan (identified as a son of Joseph Buchanan Jr.).2
Land-Buy13 Nov 1841  Later that same year Solomon purchased the interest of David Buchanan and his wife Nancy in the same 131 acres on the waters of the Middle Fork.3
Land-Buy8 Apr 1843  And on 8 April 1843 Solomon paid $95 to James Farris and his wife Mary [Buchanan] for their share. This deed clarified Mary's share as a 1/8th interest and also stated that the land had been deeded to Mary's father Joseph Buchanan by his father, Joseph Buchanan and that Mary's mother Elizabeth Buchanan lived on the land.4
Will6 Nov 1848  Solomon wrote his own will on 6 Nov. 1848. He left his two tracts (130 acres and 160 acres) on the north side of the Middle Fork of the Holston River adjoining the land of Samuel Buchanan and others to his mother Elizabeth Buchanan who was living on the land at the time. At Elizabeth's death the land was to pass to Solomon's half sister Catherine Buchanan. He left 3 tracts of land on the north side of the South Fork of the Holston River to Leonidas Love (who had already executed a bond for $2,200 for them) and noted that James C. Love lived on them. The proceeds of that sale as well as the proceeds from a tract of land Solomon owned in Indiana were also to go to his mother Elizabeth and then on her death to Solomon's half sister Catherine Buchanan.

Solomon's other property was to be used to pay a teacher's salary for the school house Solomon wished to have erected on a parcel of land he and James Cole had allowed for that purpose some years prior. Solomon allocated $200 of the interest from Leonidas Love's $2,200 bond to build the school.

Solomon left his half-brothers David and John Buchanan $25 each and his half-sister Mary Faires [also Faris/Farris] $25. He also left his niece Catherine Faires $50 and his nephew Solomon Barrick Buchanan (son of David Buchanan) $300. Andrew K. Love, son of Leonidas Love, received $100, and Nathaniel Jones, son of David Jones, also received $100. Solomon appointed Leonidas Love as his executor and allowed that he be paid $300 for his services plus an additional $150 should he be required to make a trip to the west.5
DeathFeb 1850 Solomon died of consumption in Feb 1850 in Washington County, Virginia.6
Will-Recd25 Feb 1850  His will was recorded at court on 25 Feb. 1850. Leonidas Love took the oath of executor and posted bond in the amount of $10,000.1

Research Comment:

Solomon Barrick's mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Barrick. Therefore Solomon was either born out of wedlock, or was the son of a Barrick male who married Elizabeth Barrick prior to her marriage to Joseph Buchanan.
