BirthCircacirca 1793 Clarke Graham Gardner was born circa 1793 in Burlington Flats, Otsego County, New York.1
Migration  Clarke migrated south and settled in Washington County, Virginia, around 1819. He appeared on the county tax rolls in 1820 when he paid taxes on a merchant's license. His younger brother Jeremiah probably followed him south as Clarke's 1823 tax entry included a second male.2
Court Record5 Mar 1824  Clark acquired a significant amount of personal property during his early years in Washington County. By March, 1824 he owed Thomas and Philip Baltzell $1,400. In order to secure the debt Clarke sold Thomas Overly an assortment of items in trust, to include: 75 head of horses, 5 wagons, 2,000 bushels of corn, all his cattle, sheep and hogs. This appears to have been a short term loan as the money was to be repaid by 1 April 1824 otherwise Overly was to sell the property and pay the debt.3
Tax  Clarke may not have managed to repay the loan as the 1825 Washington Co. tax rolls list him as the owner of only 2 horses. Clarke's brother Jeremiah appeared under his own name for the first time in 1825 and was taxed for 3 horses. The 2 men were taxed as one household in 1831 and 1832. They had rebuilt their stock of horses to include 16 horses and a carryall and harness.4,2
Clarke did not appear on the Washington County tax rolls after 1832.
Marriage28 Nov 1833 He married Henrietta (Adams) Brown on 28 Nov 1833 at St. Andrews Church in Princess Anne, Somerset County, Maryland.1
Death28 Oct 1849 Clarke died on 28 Oct 1849 in Somerset County.1
Burial He was buried at St. Andrews Church Cemetery in Princess Ann, Somerset County, Maryland.1
