James Hutton1

b. 29 March 1742, d. before 21 February 1815
FatherEdward Hutton2
Birth29 Mar 1742 James Hutton was born on 29 Mar 1742.3
Marriage He married Sarah Dickson, daughter of William Dickson.4
James's brother John married Sarah's sister Jane.
Migration  The Hutton family was from York County Pennsylvania. They, along with the Reid, Orr, and other families, left Pennsylvania and migrated south, settling in Washington County, Virginia. James and his brother John (and their wives) probably made the move together.
Land-Buy21 Nov 1785  James purchased 250 acres in Washington County from John Fulton on Nov. 21, 1785. The land was part of a tract called Big Glade on Cedar Creek. It had first been surveyed in 1755 for James Wood and was part of his 2,800 acre patent on Cedar Creek.5
In 1786 James' brother John purchased a large parcel several miles to the northwest, on the waters of Stalnaker's [later Baker, Thompson, now Hutton] Creek.
Land  James purchased 206 acres from George and Margaret Buchanan (who lived in Mercer Co., KY) on Nov. 10th, 1794 for 190 pds. This appears to have been part of a pre-arranged transaction as George Buchanan had purchased the tract the same day from Mary Wood [widow of James]. James and Sarah Hutton did not keep the land; they sold it 3 weeks later, on 16 Dec. 1794, to Samuel Scott Jr. [their son-in-law] for 85 pounds.6
Land-Sell18 Oct 1796  In 1796, James and Sarah sold 154 acres of their "Big Glade" land on Cedar Creek to Leonard Hutton [their son] for $1. This was the south half of the land on which James and Sarah lived.7
Will8 Apr 1803  James wrote his will in the spring of 1803. He left his wife Sarah the use of their home during her life along with various other items. James's son Leonard received his father's plantation and Bible; he was to pay James's daughters [Leonard's sisters] Mary Smith, Jenny Scott and Sarah Scott each $50 following their mother's death. Leonard was appointed executor along with John Stewart.1
Deathbefore 21 Feb 1815 James died before 21 Feb 1815.1
Sarah outlived James by only about six months, leaving an oral will dictated on her deathbed which named the same 4 children.8
