Richard's father died in 1840, following which Richard assumed the role of head of the family which included not only he and Elizabeth (they do not appear to have had children) but also Richard's mother and 2 unmarried sisters. Their neighbors included Richard's brother John, Elizabeth's widowed mother and various members of the Reid/Reed, Larimer, Moore and Edmondson families. Richard's mother Elizabeth died in 1855, followed by his wife Elizabeth in 1856. The 1860 Washington County census enumerated Richard with his sisters Jane and Mary. They farmed land valued at $6,000 and owned personal property worth at $5,000.6,7 | ||

It may have been a replacement marker for an earlier stone although none was cataloged in High On A Windy Hill. The stone reads: Richard Montgomery 1796-1863.

- [S16] It is not known who originally owned this Montgomery family bible. The script does not appear to be that of Richard Montgomery Sr., at least compared to his signature on his Rev. War. pension application. The pages containing family information were located tucked into the bible of Peter and Margaret (Montgomery) Clark. Margaret was a daughter of Richard Montgomery Sr..
