Ward23 Apr 1849  Samuel and his siblings became the wards of [their uncle] William L. Maiden in 1849, following the death of their father.2 
Death5 Oct 1864 Samuel died of dysentery on 5 Oct 1864 in Elmira, New York, while a prisoner during the Civil War. Samuel's brother-in-law, William Newton Thompson, also died at Elmira. Both men were members of Company B. of the 48th Virginia Infantry.5,6
