Birth1 Jan 1884 Horace Bowman Maiden was born on 1 Jan 1884.3
Education Horace attended Emory and Henry College.4
Marriage1903 He married Lelia Branch Davis in 1903.4
Milit-RegSep 1918  Horace registered for the World War I draft in Sep 1918 while living at Meadowview, Washington County, Virginia. He was employed as a merchant by Maiden and Son in Meadowview. The form described Horace as of medium height and build with blue eyes and light hair.1
Cens-19202 Jan 1920  Horace was enumerated near his father and mother in 1920; both men were listed as produce merchants, suggesting they were the "Maiden and Son" referenced in Horace's draft registration. Horace's entry stated that he owned his home and that it was a farm. His family also included his wife Lelia, his daughters Susie and Elizabeth and his sons Jack and Horace Jr.5
Cens-193014 Apr 1930  Horace's father died in 1922. In 1930 Horace and Lelia were again enumerated in Meadow View but this time they indicated that their residence, valued at $4,000, was not a farm. Horace entered his occupation as a "general store merchant". His 19 year old son Jack was employed as a salesman, no doubt in the same store. Jack was recently married; he and his wife Thelma were recorded with Jack's siblings Sue, Horace Jr., Elizabeth and John [age 7, born after the last census].6
Occupation  Horace appears to have stayed in the retail business after his father's death. Horace and his cousin Earnest ran a general merchandise store in Meadowview called Maiden and Maiden; later they separated the business with Horace remaining in the original building.4
Death17 Aug 1946 Horace died on 17 Aug 1946 at age 62.3
Burial He was buried at Emory Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.3
