  Though most of Carter's childhood was spent in Virginia, his first few years were spent in Madisonville where his father, a Methodist minister, was on assignment.1 
Cens-19002 Jun 1900  In 1900 the family lived in Tazewell County, Virginia; Carter was 6 years old.6 
Cens-191019 Apr 1910  By 1910 Carter's father had retired and the family was back in Washington County. living near their many relatives on Maiden's Creek. Carter worked odd jobs and attended school.2 
Education  He attended Emory and Henry College from 1912-1914.1 
Milit-RegJun 1917 In June 1917 Carter registered for the World War I draft. He stated that he was 23 years old and was born on Nov. 18th, 1884 in Madisonville, Tennessee. The location may be accurate but other records (including the 1900 census) suggest Carter was actually born in Nov. 1893. He stated that he was a self-employed farmer who was single and not responsible for any dependants.5 
Occupation Carter's father, who was not well the last part of his life, died in 1918. Carter took over the responsibilities of the family farm.1 
Marriage16 Jun 1926 He married Margaret Kelly on 16 Jun 1926.1,4 
Death3 Apr 1966  Carter and Margaret died on 3 Apr 1966 in Washington County when their car was involved in an accident with a train.1,4
