Cens-187023 Jun 1870  Joseph was recorded with his family in 1870 living in Springfield. He was enumerated by his middle name of William. Joseph's father was employed as a builder [other records also refer to him as a carpenter]. He owned land valued at $5,000 and personal property of $2,500. Besides "William" [Joseph] and his parents, the household included John (21), Anna (20), Virginia (19), Mary (14) and Ella (3).4 
Cens-1900Jun 1900  Joseph's father died sometime prior to 1900. Joseph and his mother were enumerated living together at the turn of the century. Joseph was single and was employed as a dry goods salesman.5 
Marriage3 Jan 1903 He married Essie Carter on 3 Jan 1903.3 
Occupation  Joseph opened his own store, Leedy Dry Goods and Company, at 225-227 East Commercial Street in Springfield. It was very successful and served customers from all over the county.3 
Cens-191016 Apr 1910  Joseph and Essie resided on N. Grant Road in Springfield at the time of the 1910 census enumeration.6 
  Less than 3 weeks after the enumerator's visit to the family, Essie gave birth to the couple's only child, a son they named Langdon. 
Death27 Jul 1913 Joseph died from acute gastroenteritis on 27 Jul 1913 in Springfield at age 56. The exact address of Joseph's residence at the time was either 1417 or 1419 N. Grant Rd.2 
Burial29 Jul 1913 He was buried on 29 Jul 1913 at Hazelwood Cemetery in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri.2
