Childhood  John spent the first years of his childhood in Botetourt County, Virginia, but by the mid 1850s the family had moved further south, settling in Washington County were John Sr.'s father and siblings had already settled.4,5 
Marriage22 Dec 1869 He married Mary E.C. Rodefer on 22 Dec 1869 in Washington County, Virginia.3 
  Mary was known as Betsy.1 
Cens-188022 Jun 1880  Unlike many family members, John's father does not appear to have been a farmer. John followed suit. He and Mary lived in Abingdon [many of his aunts, uncles and cousins lived near Maiden Creek] and worked as a carpenter.6 
Cens-19005 Jun 1900 By 1900 they had moved to Tennessee, where they resided on Clinch Street in Knoxville. John, or "J.C." as he was enumerated, was employed as an engineer. John and Mary (enumerated as "Lizzie") shared their home with their daughter Anna and her husband Volney Monday. Volney worked as an apprentice machinist.7
