Birth27 Dec 1857 James Thomas Carmack was born on 27 Dec 1857 in Washington County, Virginia.3,2 
Childhood James grew up on the family farm in the Goodson district of Washington County, Virginia, the youngest in a family of nine children.4,5,1 
Marriage26 Dec 1883 He married first Elizabeth Jane Ryburn, daughter of Col. William S. Ryburn and Rebecca Jane McCall, on 26 Dec 1883 in Washington County, Virginia.6 
  They were second cousins.  
Widowed28 Nov 1884  Elizabeth died 11 months after their marriage and shortly after giving birth to their only child. The infant boy was raised by James's sister Martha. 
  James did not remain on good terms with his first wife's family, and in particular with Elizabeth's father, Col. William Ryburn. The colonel wrote his will in 1886, less than two years after Elizabeth's death. He left a share of his estate to his grandson, baby William Carmack, but disallowed James from having any control over the child's inheritance. William also pointedly stated that he had intended giving Elizabeth a horse, but had not delivered it to her; yet her husband James took possession of the horse without William's permission and never returned it.7 
Marriage22 Oct 1885 He married second Mary Louisiana Ornduff, daughter of James Ornduff and Barbara (?), on 22 Oct 1885.8 
  She was a widow 5 years his senior. 
WidowedSep 1896  Mary gave birth to 4 children before she died in late 1896. 
Marriage22 Dec 1897 He married third Sarah Rebecca Carpenter, daughter of James Carpenter and Margaret Ann Ryburn, on 22 Dec 1897 in Bristol, Virginia.9,10 
  They were also second cousins. 
Cens-190010 Jun 1900 The couple were enumerated on the 1900 census for the Goodson district of Washington County, Virginia, with the 4 children from his second marriage and 1 year old James, the first of 3 children they would have together.11 
Cens-19107 May 1910  Ten years later, when the federal census was again recorded, two daughters, Pearl and Cora, had joined the family.12 
Death9 May 1911 James died on 9 May 1911 in Washington County, Virginia, at age 53.13
