Birth24 Aug 1807 Jane Beattie Ryburn Edmiston was born on 24 Aug 1807 in Washington County, Virginia.4,5,6
Name Other Jane's maiden name is recorded here as Edmiston, which is the spelling in use at the time of her birth. By the time of her 1829 marriage the spelling was in transition, often appearing as Edmondson. However Jane chose to use the traditional, older spelling when she named her son Thomas in 1832.
Devisee19 Nov 1822 Jane's father died in 1822, leaving her, at the age of fifteen, a parcel of land known by the name of the Johnston tract, as well as a portion of the home farm. She was to share these with her sister Eliza. They also jointly received their father's land in the state of Kentucky, as well as several Negroes. In addition each girl received beds, furniture and their father's cash, notes, and all remaining property.1
Ward21 Sep 1824 On 21 Sep 1824 Jane's older brother Robert was named her guardian in Washington County court, probably secondary to the probate of their father's estate.3
Education  During the early 1820s Jane was a student at Salem Academy in Salem, North Carolina.7
Marriage16 Apr 1829 She married Dr. Samuel Dunn, son of William Dunn and Lydia Musgrave, on 16 Apr 1829 in Washington County, Virginia.8,9
Residence Samuel and Jane lived in the old log house off Forest Hills Drive (route 751) just north of Glade Springs. The land had originally belonged to Jane's mother Margaret Buchanan Edmiston but had been left in part to Jane and her sister Eliza in the will of their father as mentioned above. Samuel purchased Eliza's share from she and her husband John Campbell for $610 in 1834 but the deed clarifies that Samuel [and Jane] were living on the land at the time.10,11,12
Cens-18506 Aug 1850  There they were recorded on the 1850 census with their children: Florence (19), Thomas (17), Margaret (15), Emily (13), William (11), Sarah (9), Robert (5) and Catherine (2). Samuel was recorded on the census as "Dr. Dunn" and his occupation was listed as "physician."13
Death23 May 1861 Jane died of fever on 23 May 1861 at Washington County, Virginia, at age 53.4,14,5
