b. 17 January 1800, d. 16 February 1875
FatherJames Hutton1 b. 1764, d. bet 7 Jan 1820 - 15 Feb 1820
MotherIsabel Orr1
Birth17 Jan 1800 Arthur Hutton was born on 17 Jan 1800.2
Heir  Arthur's father died in early 1820. His will did not mention his wife, suggesting Arthur's stepmother Rachel was already deceased [Arthur's mother had died some years earlier]. James Hutton's will left Arthur and his brother John in charge of the family until their youngest sister turned 15 in late 1827. At that time James' land was to be sold and the proceeds divided among his children.1
Marriage23 Dec 1820 Arthur and Eleanor Snodgrass, daughter of Joseph Snodgrass and Ann Hutton, were married by Rev. Alexander McEwan on 23 Dec 1820 in Washington County, Virginia.3
They were first cousins; Eleanor's mother and Arthur's father were siblings. Eleanor and Arthur may have been friends from childhood as their grandfathers settled adjacent land in Washington County in the mid 1780s. Eleanor's brother Joseph Snodgrass married Arthur's sister Eleanor Hutton. There were several other marriages between the Snodgrass and Hutton families.
Land-Buy10 Nov 1828  In late 1828 John and his brother Arthur each purchased from their siblings half of the two tracts belonging to their father's estate.4,5,6
Land-Buy22 Sep 1832  Four years later Arthur purchased John's share of both tracts for $650. The two tracts only touched at one corner which Arthur must have found awkward as some years later he purchased 11 1/2 acres from John and Mary Clark which provided a connecting strip between the 2 parcels.7,8
Land-BuySep 1841  Arthur also acquired other land in the Hutton Creek neighborhood, including 156 3/4 acres to the north of his 129 acre parcel. This included the 106 acres Arthur's grandfather, John Hutton, first purchased when he settled in Washington County. Arthur also acquired part of the land that had belonged to Eleanor's grandfather John Snodgrass.9,10,11,12
Guardian  Arthur and Eleanor's eldest daughter, Ann, married Edward Crow in 1839. Edward died less than 10 years later leaving Ann with 4 young children. Arthur served as their guardian.13
Cens-185022 Aug 1850  The first census to record all members of a household by name was enumerated in 1850. It provides a glimpse of Arthur's family. He was 50 years old and owned land valued at $11,000. Ellen was 47. Six of the couple's 8 children were all still at home. They were listed as: James (26), Amanda (18), Joseph (16), Nancy (14), Samuel (12) and Catherine (3).14
Land-Buy14 Dec 1859  As the years went by Arthur purchased considerable additional property. In 1859 he paid $7,750 for 606 acres in what was known as Shugartville, an area southeast of Abingdon.15
Cens-18608 Jul 1860  By 1860 Arthur's real estate was valued at $40,000 and he owned personal property worth $15,000. This included the 9 slaves who cared for his home and farm.16,17
Despite their wealth, the Civil War impacted Arthur and Eleanor as it did most every family in the community. The couple's two youngest sons both fought for the Confederacy. Samuel joined the 37th Virginia Infantry (known as the "Glade Spring Rifles") in the early days of the war. In 1864 he was captured by Union forces and held at Ft. Delaware where he became one of 600 officers transported to Ft. Morris in the harbor at Charleston. There they were subjected to friendly fire and fed starvation rations. History now knows them as the "Immortal 600".

Son Joseph enlisted with Co. F. of the 63rd Virginia Infantry. For much of the war he was detailed as a teamster. In Jan. 1865 he was captured near McMinnville, Tennessee and sent to Camp Chase in Ohio.18,19,20
Arthur built a beautiful brick home for his family on his Hutton Creek land. It still stands today although it is a shadow of its former self. Confusion persists over who built the home and when it was built. Some descendants claim it was built by Arthur's father James after his earlier log home burned in a fire. The Virginia Dept. of Historical Resources, based on the style and construction, estimates the home dates to around 1850 which eliminates James, who died in 1820, as the builder.

The newspaper article below, dated April 10th, 1863, suggests Arthur built the current structure after an 1863 fire destroyed the previous home, which was probably wood and may have been built by James21,22

We regret to learn that Mr. Arthur Hutton, near Glade Spring Depot, in this county, lost his beautiful residence by fire on Friday morning last, about 2 o'clock. It is supposed to have been accidental, and had so far progressed before discovered, that most of the furniture and about $200 in money were destroyed.23

Cens-18708 Oct 1870  This loss may be partially reflected in the 1870 census which valued Arthur's real property at $16,000, significantly less than his 1860 evalutation. Arthur and Ellen were enumerated in 1870 with their eldest son James (47) and two additional household members: Minnie Cox, 14 and Sarah J. Hutton, 7.24
Sarah J. [Josephine] Hutton was the daughter of Arthur and Ellen's son Joseph and his first wife, Sarah Ann Fudge, who died following Sarah Josephine's birth.
Will13 Nov 1873  Arthur wrote his will on Nov. 13th, 1873. He left Ellen a variety of items and clarified that she was to have control of the "mansion house" during her lifetime. Arthur divided his property among his children, leaving the 129 acres "on which the brick house is built" to his son James. Daughter Ann Crow received what was known as the "John Hutton tract containing 78 acres. Arthur left his son Joseph 160 acres known as the old James Meek place, and the 53 acre tract James Clark conveyed to James Hutton in 1817. Son Samuel received the land Arthur bought from the heirs of Dixon Hutton. Daughters Isabella Cox and Amanda Wade divided a portion of the Shugartville farm. Arthur also remembered his granddaughter Sarah Josephine Hutton with land known as the Snodgrass and Jamison place.25
Death16 Feb 1875 Arthur died on 16 Feb 1875 at age 75.2
Burial He was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.2

Research Comment:

Arthur bought and sold other properties in addition to those discussed above. See the Any Hutton research page for additional entries.
