BirthMar 1824 James Dixon Hutton was born in Mar 1824 in Washington County, Virginia.5,6
James was the oldest of his parent's 3 sons and the second eldest of their 8 children. Arthur Hutton, his father, owned a large quantity of land in Washington County, including a tract on Hutton Creek which James' great grandfather, John Hutton, had originally acquired by patent in 1792. Arthur build a beautiful brick home on this land where James no doubt lived in some comfort. He appears to have been charged with staying at home and helping run the farm, as he was enumerated with his parents in both 1860 (age 35) and 1870 (47).7,8
Fath-Death16 Feb 1875  When Arthur Hutton died in Feb. 1875 he left James the home and the 129 acres on which it sat with the stipulation James' mother was to have control of the "mansion" during her lifetime.9
Marriage18 Nov 1875 James married Missouri Ellen Naff on 18 Nov 1875 in Washington County.2
James was 51 and Missouri was 27. In 1870 Missouri had been enumerated living with James' brother Joseph Hutton and his family. Perhaps that was how James and Missouri met.10
Cens-18802 Jun 1880  James and Missouri were enumerated in 1880 in the Glade Spring District of Washington County with a son, Arthur 3, a daughter, Mary [Kate?], 2, and a son John, nine months, as well as 2 servants.11
Death13 Dec 1887 James died of pneumonia on 13 Dec 1887 in Washington County at age 63.6
Burial He was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.5
