Birth22 Jun 1802 Eleanor Snodgrass was born on 22 Jun 1802.2
Marriage23 Dec 1820 Eleanor and Arthur Hutton, son of James Hutton and Isabel Orr,were married by Rev. Alexander McEwan on 23 Dec 1820 in Washington County, Virginia.3
They were first cousins; Eleanor's mother and Arthur's father were siblings. Eleanor and Arthur may have been friends from childhood as their grandfathers settled adjacent land in Washington County in the mid 1780s. Eleanor's brother Joseph Snodgrass married Arthur's sister Eleanor Hutton. There were several other marriages between the Snodgrass and Hutton families.
Court Record5 Oct 1831  In 1831 Arthur and Eleanor were the plaintiffs in a court case brought by Eleanor and two of her sisters against Ann Snodgrass [their mother]. Their goal was to prevent Ann from removing certain slaves from Virginia.1 [Eleanor's father was deceased and her mother may have planned to move west with one or more of Eleanor's brothers]
Arthur inherited a share of his father's land on Hutton Creek, east of Glade Spring. He bought out his sibling's share of the land and then purchased other land from his cousins so that he eventually owned a good deal of the Hutton Creek land that had belonged to his grandfather John Hutton. Arthur also bought part of the land that had belonged to Eleanor's grandfather John Snodgrass. He built a beautiful house for the family known as Hutton Plantation. The family owned a carriage; Eleanor enjoyed a pianoforte.
Cens-185022 Aug 1850  The first census to record all members of a household by name was enumerated in 1850. It provides a glimpse of Arthur's family. He was 50 years old and owned land valued at $11,000. Ellen was 47. Six of the couple's 8 children were all still at home. They were listed as: James (26), Amanda (18), Joseph (16), Nancy (14), Samuel (12) and Catherine (3).4
Land-Buy14 Dec 1859  As the years went by Arthur purchased considerable additional property. In 1859 he paid $7,750 for 606 acres in what was known as Shugartville, an area southeast of Abingdon.5
Cens-18608 Jul 1860  By 1860 Arthur's real estate was valued at $40,000 and he owned personal property worth $15,000. This included the 9 slaves who cared for his home and farm.6,7
Despite their wealth, the Civil War impacted Arthur and Eleanor as it did most every family in the community. The couple's two youngest sons both fought for the Confederacy. Samuel joined the 37th Virginia Infantry (known as the "Glade Spring Rifles") in the early days of the war. In 1864 he was captured by Union forces and held at Ft. Delaware where he became one of 600 officers transported to Ft. Morris in the harbor at Charleston. There they were subjected to friendly fire and fed starvation rations. History now knows them as the "Immortal 600".

Son Joseph enlisted with Co. F. of the 63rd Virginia Infantry. For much of the war he was detailed as a teamster. In Jan. 1865 he was captured near McMinnville, Tennessee and sent to Camp Chase in Ohio.8,9,10
Cens-18708 Oct 1870  Arthur and Ellen were enumerated in 1870 with their 47 year old son James and two additional household members: Minnie Cox, 14 and Sarah J. Hutton, 7.11
Sarah J. [Josephine] Hutton was the daughter of Arthur and Ellen's son Joseph and his first wife, Sarah Ann Fudge, who died following Sarah Josephine's birth.
Widowed16 Feb 1875  Arthur died in Feb., 1875. His will left Ellen all of the household furniture and instructed that she was to have the use of the "mansion house". He also left her his books, two horses, and the use of the carriage during her lifetime.12
Will1 Apr 1876 The following year Ellen wrote her own will. She left her son James a walnut table, her son Joseph a bed and bed clothing and the same to her son Samuel. She also remembered her granddaughter Sarah Jane Hutton, and her four daughters: Ann Crow, Isabella J. Cox, Amanda M. Wade and Nancy E. Hooper.13
Death4 Feb 1880 Eleanor died on 4 Feb 1880 in Washington County at age 77.2,14
Burial She was buried at Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.2
