FatherJohn Snodgrass2
Marriage15 Sep 1787 Joseph Snodgrass married Ann Hutton, daughter of John Hutton and Jane Dickson, on 15 Sep 1787 in Washington County, Virginia.3,4
Joseph's father, John Snodgrass Sr, purchased a large tract of land [over 400 acres] from Thomas Bates in March 1786. The land sat on the waters of what was then known as Stalnaker's Creek [later Bakers, then Hutton] Creek. The Snodgrass land sat adjacent to and east of a parcel Ann Hutton's father purchased in May 1786 and on which he made his home. Hence Joseph and Ann grew up as neighbors. Joseph's brother John Snodgrass married Ann's sister Margaret Hutton. Joseph's father deeded Joseph 220 acres from the eastern side of his land in 1794. The elder man's will (written in 1795 and recorded in 1796) left the remainder of the land to his son John. Therefore the two couples also lived on adjacent land as adults.5,6,7
Land-Buy10 Oct 1807  Joseph purchased an additional 198 acres from John Todd in Oct. 1807. It sat just east of the acreage Joseph acquired from his father.8
Deathbetween Oct 1827 and Mar 1828 Joseph died between Oct 1827 and Mar 1828.9
Will1828  His will, written on Oct. 15, 1827, left a Negro woman Sarah and her child, as well as a third of his personal property for his wife's use. Joseph left his sons John and Joseph the tract of land on which they lived to be equally divided between them. They were to jointly pay $150 in horses, cattle or grain to their brother David, and another $150 to be divided between their sisters Jenny Orr, Polly Eakin and Eleanor Hutton. Joseph left the tract of land on which he lived to be divided between his sons Abram and William.9

Research Comment:

The disposition of the two tracts of land mentioned in Joseph's will proved very useful in differentiating Joseph's sons from other Snodgrass men of the same name. Joseph lived on the tract he purchased from his father in 1794. Joseph willed the upper part of this tract to his son William. William and Martha [Buchanan] sold the same land to William Hayter for $700 in 1830. Joseph willed the lower part [53+ acres] to his son Abraham who sold the same land to Moore Robinson for $250 in 1830. Abraham was married to Nancy [Montgomery] at the time. Both William and Abraham migrated to Indiana.

The second parcel, consisting of the 198 acres Joseph bought in 1807 and which he left to his sons Joseph and John, was divided by them and then sold in 1833. John and Ann [Jamison] Snodgrass sold their share to John Stoneman of Wythe Co. in Sept. 1833. Joseph Snodgrass Jr. and Eleanor [Hutton] sold their share to Moore Robinson in March 1833. John and Joseph also left Virginia with their families.10,11,12,13 [These tracts were platted using DeedMapper software]
