Dear Brother
I take my pen in hand this evening to inform you that I am well at present
[.] I received yours of the 17th in due time; I supposed you will not have the opportunity of writing many more letters before you will have to leave home for the seat of war again; I would advise you to come well clad. put on as many good warm clothing as you possibly can; and do not over load yoursely [sic] with too many suits, bring only a change of under clothing, you ought to have 2 pair of drawers 2 under and 2 over shirts 1 pair of pants with coat and vest socks & probably you had better bring an overcoat[.] I have none but I have two blankets be sure and bring a blanket[.] You cannot come too well clad[.]

I have no news of importance to write at present; every thing is quiet along our lines as far as I know; the weather continues bad; On saturday night and sunday quite a deep snow fell and is yet on the ground[.]

I would like very much to have a hat bring me one if you can[.] I believe I need nothing else[.] You had better get you a knapsack if you can before you come here, there is no chance here to get one; bring us some ink and postage stamps and if you can a right smart snack of something to eat; for we have nothing but bread and bacon and but little of that; Answer me and let me know when you are coming[.]

Hoping these lines may find you all well I will close[.] Give my respects to all[.]
                                                                                       Your Brother Moses H. Buchanan
