  Lewie's father died around the time of her birth. Her mother remarried a few years later and moved to Oklahoma with her second husband. Lewie's maternal grandfather, John Wedding, then took Lewie and her older sister Alta May back to Virginia to live with he and his second wife Elizabeth (Klepper) Wedding. Lewie married William James and had a large family herself. She and William provided a home for her stepgrandmother Elizabeth after John Wedding's death.
