Cens-186012 Jun 1860  James and Hannah resided in Madison County, Alabama, where they were enumerated on the 1860 census with Ann (14), Mary (12), Gibson (8) and Luana (5). Jane's age was reported as 23 [not correct]. William Davis [father of James] was also living with the family.5 
WidowedMay 1867  Hannah Jane died in May 1867. 
Marriage License11 Nov 1867 He and Penelope Norris obtained a marriage license on 11 Nov 1867 in Madison County, Alabama.2,6 
Cens-187025 Aug 1870  Three years later they were enumerated on the 1870 Madison County Census. James, at age 46, owned property valued at $2,500 and personal property worth $2,000. He was both a farmer and a miller. Penelope was 25 and was stepmother to 3 of James's children from his first marriage who were still at home.7 
Death30 Oct 1883 James died on 30 Oct 1883 at age 59.3,1 
Burial He was buried at Mt. Paran Cemetery in New Market, Madison County, Alabama.3,1 

Research Comment:

There are two stones for James at Mt. Paran Cemetery, an original headstone and a newer marker bearing the emblem of the Sons of the Confederacy. That marker states James was a private in Co. A of the 7th Alabama Cavalry. However the Confederate compiled service records for that unit do not include a James or Walter Davis. A J.W. Davis served as a private in Co. B. but he died July 10th, 1864 and had enlisted at Perry Co., half a state away from Madison County. A descendant has made inquries to the Sons of the Confederacy in the hope of obtaining additional information.8,9
