Marriage He married Lovetta Ward, daughter of John D. Ward and Margaret McCready.1 
Cens-19007 Jun 1900 In 1900 Jim and Lovetta lived with his parents in the Rich Valley district of Smyth County. Their 3 children: Rebecca, Worley and Lysander (enumerated Liesander) were also recorded.2 
Cens-191021 Apr 1910  In 1910 James was recorded as the head of the household; he and "Lavetta" had been married 22 years. James was working as a public works laborer. He owned his own home. The 2 youngest children, Worley and "Sanders" [Lysanders] were recorded as was James widowed mother, 77 year old Elizabeth Frye. In addition Charles and Rebecca Lammie were living in the household [probably James and Lovetta's daughter Rebecca].3 
Cens-192015 Jan 1920  By 1930 son Worley had left home and James's mother was not present although James's sister Minnie (42) had joined the household instead. Sanders, age 22, was still living at home. Charles and Rebecca Lammie were enumerated as a separate household, albeit the adjacent one. James was again listed as a laborer; this time for the M.A. Works.4 
Death1932 Jim died in 1932.1 
Burial He was buried at Elizabeth Cemetery in Saltville, Washington County, Virginia.1
