Childhood Though John was born in Virginia, he spent much of his childhood in Nebraska and Colorado, where he appears on various census records as John or "Byars."3,4,5
Legatee30 Jun 1906 John's cousin (once removed), Elizabeth Byars Hall, left him $500 when she wrote her will in 1906. If he died before she did the money was to go to his brothers and sisters. Elizabeth also left him a red and white bed spread. Since Byars was only 14 when Elizabeth wrote her will, and she did not remember any of his siblings, it is likely the gift was in acknowledgement of the Byars name.2
